Things to Do

The Walters Art Museum

Michaela and John came here for their very first date. Michaela lured John here with the promise of an excellent armory collection. Located in the heart of historic Mount Vernon, next to the Washington monument, The Walter's Art Museum, a free museum, is often thought of as "a collection of collections" from 19th-century paintings of French countryside and city life to Ethiopian icons, richly illuminated Qur’ans and Gospel books, ancient Roman sarcophagi, and images of the Buddha. All in all it's an eclectic place sure to intrigue kids and adults alike. Michaela's favorite room is the "Chamber of Wonders" and John's is the "Ancient Treasury".

John and Michaela went to the BMA on their second date! Founded in 1914 the BMA is a free museum that hosts an eclectic collection of art from ancient egypt artifacts, to a robust collection of Henri Matisse works (1,000), to contemporary artists. Afterwards, if you want to follow in Michaela and John's footsteps on their second date, go to the PaperMoon Diner, very close by, for excellent american food and milkshakes.

Michaela and John went here after the BMA on their second date! The PaperMoon Diner boasts delicious american fare, and incredible milk shakes with house-made whip cream. Michaela loves the blueberry milkshake and John's favorite is the sea salt and caramel, but what makes this place so good is the decoration. It is out of this world quirky, creative, and bizarre.

Pitango Bakery + Cafe

Spitting distance from the Sagamore Pendry, and also on the waterfront, Pitango is Michaela and John's absolute favorite bakery and sandwich shop. Exquisite Italian sandwiches made with imported prosciutto di parma (ham) on in-house made focaccia. Michaela always orders the caprese with ham with a fresh squeezed mint lemonade or a vanilla chai latte, and John orders the Rustico and a subpar coffee. Everything but the coffee is delicious. Andrea loves the cruffins.

National Aquarium

Located in the inner harbor, (not far from Fells Point), is the Baltimore National Aquarium with award winning exhibits. The thoughtful design and innovative architecture make this aquarium particularly riveting. You get to take escalators over shallow reefs, descend into the depths of the ocean with large fish and sharks swimming next to you, and go high into the Australian wild. Don't forget to visit the jellyfish invasion exhibit (Michaela's favorite if she had to choose)!

Greedy Reads

Located just a few blocks up the street from Pitango Bakery is John and Michaela's favorite independent bookstore, Greedy Reads. They have something for everyone, but their collection emphasizes social justice and minority voices. They have a robust section on Baltimore history and culture, as well. Their second location is bigger and located in Remington (very close to the PaperMoon Diner and BMA).

American Visionary Art Museum

800 Key Hwy, Baltimore, MD 21230, USA

The American Visionary Art Museum is a unique and quirky Baltimore experience. Unlike most museums, this museum only showcases self-taught artists. They "specialize in thematic exhibitions that combine art, science, philosophy, humor, and especially social justice and betterment." You can see some of kinetic sculptures from the annual Baltimore Kinetic Sculpture Race on display, and interact with the mini automaton sculptures. This is a great activity for the whole family. This is the only museum not free, but is truly worth it.
